Introduction to Health Professions

Description: The Introduction to Health Professions program is an introduction course to subject matter that pertains to medically related careers. This introduction course is to help students interested in the medical field in determining if a medical career is appropriate for their interests and capabilities. This course will cover subject matter such as History of Medicine, Health Care Systems, Careers in Healthcare and Career Exploration, Personal Qualities and Employability Skills, Safety in Healthcare, and Legalities and Ethics in Healthcare.
Health Certifications

Description: The Health Certifications course is designed to prepare students for entry level careers in healthcare. We will cover some basic anatomy in this course and students will be given the opportunity to be certified in the American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid course; Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)patient privacy certification through the Centers of Rural Health program; Online Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Healthcare specific certification; Stop the Bleed certification, and ServSafe online certification, used in the food service careers ie Dietary Aide in hospitals or nursing homes. The following will also be taught during the course, but will not have a specific certification with it; CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Donning and Doffing personal protective equipment and handwashing. Vital Signs- Blood Pressure, Pulse, respirations, temperature, oxygen saturation. Use of military time.
Medical Terminology
Dual Credit WSC

Description: This course is offered as a dual college credit through Williston State College. In this course students will develop skills necessary for decoding commonly used medical terms. Students will learn the meaning of prefixes, suffixes, & word roots. This medical terminology course covers the basic knowledge & understanding of medical language & terminology used by healthcare professionals. This course requires students to do a lot of independent work & good time management.
Dental Assisting
Grades: 11-12
Description: The DA Prep Online Qualified Dental Assistant Course is a comprehensive program that teaches the student about dental assisting, the dental profession, the dental office and the laws of the state of North Dakota. Modules include radiology, infection control, dental anatomy, oral health, prevention of dental disease, patient information, dental charting, instrument identification, chairside assisting, pain management, dental materials, dental procedures, career preparation and employability. 300 Field Hours in a Dentist's Office are required to become a QDA.
Emergency Medical Technician
Credit: 2 per year (Block Class)

Description: Requirement: Students must purchase EMS pants and black steel-toed boots (this is the student's responsibility). Students will also need to have transportation to the fire department for ride-alongs.
Students enrolling in this course will complete training in CPR for Health Care Providers and the Nationals Curriculum Emergency Medical Technician – Basic Course. The course prepares the student to respond to a wide range of emergencies such as heart attacks, auto accidents, and diabetic problems. Students participate in extensive “hands-on” practical sessions using modern prehospital care equipment under the instruction of paramedics from the local paramedic service. Upon completion of the course, students are eligible for ND State licensure testing and they will have extensive knowledge and experience to aid them in choosing a healthcare career. Health Careers I & II

Description: The Careers in Health program will introduce students to a wide variety of health care fields as well as core skills needed for entry-level employment in a health care environment. Certifications obtained will include CPR, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed. Students will spend the majority of the fourth quarter in job shadow experiences.
Certified Nursing Assistant
Dual Credit WSC
Grades: 11-12
Prerequisite: Age 16+
Description: This course is offered as a dual college credit through Williston State College. The program provides classroom instruction and clinical practice to prepare the student for employment as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in a skilled nursing facility, acute care facility or home health care. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the required State certification exam to become a CNA.
Pharmacy Technician

Description: The Pharmacy Technician Fundamentals course introduces students to the essential knowledge and skills required to work in a pharmacy setting. This Career and Technical Education (CTE) course provides an overview of pharmaceutical terminology, prescription processing, medication classifications, and pharmacy law and ethics. Students will gain hands-on experience with pharmacy calculations, drug dispensing techniques, and inventory management. Additionally, the course prepares students for entry-level roles in pharmacy settings and serves as a foundation for national certification exams.
Fire Fighting
Credit: 2 per year (Block Class)
Grades: 12 (Must be 18 to take Certification Test)
Description: The course is designed to give students new to firefighting the practical and cognitive training needed to operate safely and effectively on the fireground. Students will learn the fundamental skills of becoming a firefighter: Fire Service; Health and Safety; Personal Protective Equipment; Communications; Fire Behavior; Building Construction; Portable Fire Extinguishers; Tools and Equipment; Ropes and Knots; Forcible Entry; Ladders; Search and Rescue; Ventilation; Water Supply Systems; Fire Hose Appliances and Nozzles; Supply Line and Attack Line; Fire Suppression; FireFighter Survival; Salvage and Overhaul; Rehabilitation; Wildland and Ground Cover Fires; Hazardous Materials; and Incident Command Systems.
Law Enforcement

Description: This course develops the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare for a career in law enforcement. Students will get an overview of the history, organization, and functions of local, state, and federal law enforcement and the foundational skills necessary to fulfill law enforcement duties. Course topics may include the role of constitutional law, the US legal system, criminal law, law enforcement terminology, physical fitness, and self-defense. Additional topics may explore specific types of crimes, ethical and legal responsibilities, crime scene investigations, and emergency medical procedures.
